Our Freshers hurlers defeated GMIT in a thrilling game of hurling played in tough conditions in Carnmore Galway on Thursday afternoon. AIT started the game at a blistering pace with Andrew Moran from Loughrea scoring 1-02, GMIT responded well and took the lead mid-way through the first half but AIT were inspired by Wicklowman Gavin Weir who slotted free after free over the bar. Just on the stroke of half time a Michael Morris goal for AIT put the visitors ahead at half time on a scoreline of AIT 2-08 GMIT 1-07. But it was GMIT who came charging out of the blocks scoring 1-02 without reply to lead by a point at the start of the second half. The scoreline remained this way pretty much for the remainder of the match but with 5 minutes to go AIT got a crucial goal after great work by David Butler who unselfishly passed to Michael Morris who rattled the GMIT net. After a short break where players from both teams went down with cramps, AIT prevailed on a score line of 4-13 to 4-10. AIT now play UUJ in the semi-final on the 26th February.
